The EMERSON A6500-UM Universal Measurement Card is a two-channel measurement and protection module for the AMS 6500 ATG machinery protection system. Its channels can operate independently or be combined according to the selected measurement mode. It supports eddy-current, piezoelectric, seismic, low-frequency vibration, Hall-effect, LVDT-related, and dynamic-pressure measurement applications.

The card also provides five digital inputs and six digital outputs. Measurement data is transferred through the internal RS-485 bus to the A6500-CC communication card, which provides higher-level Modbus communication to host systems.

*LVDT measurement requires the appropriate A6500-LC converter. Emerson lists the A6500-LC specifically as an accessory for this application.

The -UM can be configured for shaft vibration, case vibration, position, speed/key-related measurements, and dynamic pressure measurements. The exact measurement capability depends on the selected configuration and connected sensor type.

Product Introduction (Anti-Template)

The EMERSON -UM is the measurement card used when one machinery protection rack needs to handle more than a single type of sensor signal. Its two channels can work independently or together, allowing the same hardware platform to handle vibration, position, speed, and other rotating-equipment measurements. Emerson specifies compatibility with eddy-current, piezoelectric, seismic, Hall-effect, low-frequency vibration, and other sensor technologies.

The card is installed in an -xR system rack and works with the -CC communication card for configuration and higher-level data transmission. That distinction matters: the -UM performs the measurement work, while the communication card handles the external data interface.

QC, Procurement & Logistics SOP

1) Inbound Verification
Verify the front-panel marking as and check the PCB, 48-pin connector, front-panel condition, labels, revision information, and visible component condition. Record the serial number before testing.

2) Live Measurement Testing
Where an -xR test rack is available, verify module startup, channel status, sensor excitation/interface behavior, and representative measurement values. Test the applicable measurement mode rather than simply checking whether the card powers up.

3) Sensor-Specific Verification
The input circuit is configurable for different sensor technologies. The test setup should therefore use the same sensor type or an appropriate calibrated signal simulator as the customer’s application. Do not connect an arbitrary sensor simply because its connector appears compatible.

4) Analog & Digital Output Testing
Verify the applicable 0/4–20 mA output and representative digital input/output functions. The analog outputs are electrically isolated from the system supply and share a common ground according to Emerson’s specification.

5) Configuration & Communication Check
The -CC communication card is required for configuration. Where possible, verify communication between the measurement card and -CC through the internal RS-485 bus and confirm that measurement/status data can be accessed by the configuration environment.

6) QA & ESD Packaging
Use ESD-safe handling throughout inspection and packaging. Protect the 48-pin connector and front-panel assembly from mechanical impact. Place the module in an anti-static bag with rigid cushioning and moisture protection.

7) Global Logistics & Export Compliance
Confirm the commercial invoice description, country of origin, HS classification, declared value, and destination import requirements. For this product, a description such as “industrial machinery protection measurement card” is more accurate than a generic “PLC module.”

8) Secure Air/Sea Packaging
Use anti-static packaging, rigid internal cushioning, and a moisture-resistant outer carton. The card should be immobilized inside the package to prevent connector or PCB damage during international transportation.

Technical Pitfalls & Integration Warnings

1) Do not treat the -UM as a generic vibration input card.
It is a configurable universal measurement card. Sensor type, measurement mode, channel configuration, and associated rack hardware all affect how the module operates.

2) Check the sensor type before replacement.
The -UM supports several sensor technologies, including eddy-current, piezoelectric, seismic, Hall-effect, and low-frequency vibration sensors. The electrical interface and configuration are not identical for every sensor type.

3) LVDT applications require the -LC.
If the customer’s existing measurement uses an LVDT, verify that the required -LC converter is present. Emerson lists -LC as the LVDT converter accessory for.

4) Check channel configuration before substitution.
The two channels may operate independently or be combined depending on the selected measurement mode. Speed applications are a particular exception: the operating manual states that both channels are used for speed measurement, so a mixed speed-plus-other-measurement configuration should not be assumed.

5) Do not con with -CC.
The performs measurement and monitoring functions, while the is the communication card used to transfer data and provide the configuration interface. They are different modules with different system roles.

6) Verify the rack before installation.
is designed for the0-xR system rack. A physically similar industrial measurement card from another system should not be treated as a substitute simply because its signal range appears similar.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: What is the EME used for?
It is a universal measurement card for the AMS 6500 ATG machinery protection system, used for vibration, position, speed, and related machinery measurements.

Q2: How many measurement channels does have?
It has two measurement channels. They can operate independently or be combined depending on the selected measurement mode.

Q3: What sensors can accept?
Emerson specifies support for eddy-current, piezoelectric, seismic, low-frequency vibration, Hall-effect, LVDT-related, and dynamic-pressure sensors, subject to the applicable measurement configuration.

Q4: Does have 4–20 mA outputs?
Yes. The card provides 0/4–20 mA analog outputs for measurement results.

Q5: Does communicate directly with a host computer?
The measurement data is transmitted internally through RS-485 to the -CC communication card, which handles Modbus RTU/Modbus TCP/IP communication and PC configuration functions.

Q6: Can be hot-swapped?
Emerson’s specification identifies the card as a hot-swappable module. Even so, the actual replacement procedure should follow the installed AMS 6500 system and site maintenance procedure.

Q7: What information should I provide when ordering a replace?
Provide the complete model, module revision if visible, existing rack model, sensor type, measurement function, and a photo of the installed card. For LVDT applications, also confirm whether the -LC converter is installed.
